Horseland
In Lexington, KY ... everything is about horses. Your eye will catch a glimpse of equine features on shop windows, licence plates, mugs/crockery and cutlery, T-shirts ... painted on doors, sculpted at street corners, carved in tree trunks. Also known as 'the horse capital of the world', Lexington has been selected for the 2010 World Equestrian Games. The Kentucky Derby (North America's annual most important horse race competition, roughly comparable to UK's Royal Ascot) is held in Louisville, 90 mins west of Lexington.
Not only horses have names here, but roads are named after them! The most famous ones, clearly. It is like seeing things from a totally different perspective: in Italy, it would be like naming a piazza after the quadruped on which Garibaldi gallopped at full speed while conquering Sicily....all we know as Italians is that he used to ride a white horse... Oh well, that's popular mitography!
Yes.....the four-legged animals here go by the name of 'Man 'O War' (reputedly the best thoroughbred racehorse of all times, whose life and career spanned across the war years), 'Cigar' (voted horse of the decade for the 1990s), 'John Henry' (the top money-winning thoroughbred gelding in racing history) and so on. A horse park has also been devoted to their remembrance and on their tombstone flowers are still being laid.
Don't get a wrong idea, though. This is no cowboy land: much to my regret, there are no boots, check shirts and broad-brimmed hat to be seen around here : ( Yet, you can still enjoy the occasional mechanical bull ride if you go to the right places. Not that I have. But they almost made me do it!!

La terra dei cavalli.
A Lexington (Kentucky) tutto ha sembianze equine: dalle vetrine alle targhe, dalle tazze/piatti e posate alle magliette...cavalli sono dipinti sui portoni, scolpiti agli angoli delle strade, intagliati nel legno. Nota anche cone 'la capitale mondiale dei cavalli', Lexington è stata selezionata per i Giochi Equestri Mondiali del 2010. Il Kentucky Derby (la corsa equestre annuale più importante del Nord America, paragonabile a Royal Ascot in Gran Bretagna) si tiene a Louisville, 90 minuti a ovest di Lexington.
Non solo i cavalli hanno nomi, ma le strade portano il nome dei cavalli! Di quelli più celebri, ovviamente. E' come guardare la realtà da una prospettiva differente: in Italia sarebbe come dare ad una piazza il nome del quadrupede su cui Garibaldi, al galoppo, conquistò la Sicilia. Tutto quel che noi sappiamo è che si trattava di un cavallo bianco...o forse è mitografia popolare?
Esatto...questi quadrupedi sono noti come 'Man O' War' ('L'uomo della guerra', pare il migliore purosangue da corsa di tutti i tempi, vissuto tra le due guerre), 'Cigar' ('Sigaro': votato cavallo degli anni '90), 'John Henry' (il purosangue più redditizio nella storia delle corse dei cavalli) ecc.
Non fraintendetemi. Qui non siamo nelle terre dei cowboy: ahimè niente stivali, camice a scacchi e cappelli dalla tesa larga. Tuttavia, si può ancora provare l'emozione di una cavalcata sul toro meccanico. Non che io l'abbia provata. Ma quasi!
