Piccole perle del Road Trip 3: News from Chelsea Market, NYC
We said we'd do it and we did it (the fact that we actually did it despite ourselves is, I guess, at this point, irrelevant): we got our favourite bagel from Chelsea Market in NYC! So here's what: Monday 20 August was going to be our last day on the road as we were planning to be at our final destination by sunset. However, we knew it was also going to be the toughest: tiredness (which had been building up during the previous week) and anxiety to be arrived were starting to be unwelcome trip companions. Besides, we were headed through a fairly congested area. The vast Mid-West territories were already lost in our memory behind us ; (
So, once in New Jersey we (or I should say 'I'!) decided that WE SHOULD TRY AND AVOID MANHATTAN. I was just too tired to deal with that and, to be frank, I become a big sissy when I'm behind a steering wheel!
So we (or again I should say 'I') checked the maps, made sure that we were going to cut New York City to the north of Manhattan, check the road we were on, checked it again...yea I think this is the right one...yea...yea right! 'Oh Steve, look, that sign says LINCOLN TUNNEL...I don't see any Lincoln Tunnel in the north of Manhattan. Are we already more north than we thought??'
I'll save you some time and I'll say that actually we were about to come out right in the heart of Manhattan, between 30th St and 10th Av....which is ONLY fifteen streets away from Chelsea Market! So, there we went. Parked the car at a fee per hour I don't even want to recall and we were off to our bagel! Salmon and pesto cream cheese for me; salmon and garlic (!!!) cream cheese for the English lad.Another quick info about Chelsea Market: a new shop came to be open in the few months we had not been there and that was a MILK BAR! For somebody who's decided to get away from dairy, it is not ideal, but I'm sure it can be an interesting experience to try (whatever they do in there, which I haven't figured out yet!).
